Silas Kopf, Benches at Smith Museum of Art

by on November 1, 2011

During out trip to The Smith Museum of Art we saw many different artist and styles of art.  The one that stood out the most to me was the benches for people to sit on and view the art on the walls.  most benches are just slates of wood on metal designed to sit on, but these were works of art that few people would want to sit on.  This is an on going project that The Smith Museum of Art calls Sit up and Take Notice, were they hire woodworking artists to make benches that compliment the art on display.  In the classical painting section there was a colection of four benches made by Silas Kopf who is an amazing artist who created lifelike portraits of hands, people, and animals on his benches to match the collection of art on display.

As the art on display changes so will the benches.  I hope to see more of his work on display at The Smith Museum of Art.
