Jonathan Winfisky, January 31st

by on February 7, 2012

Last week we got to go to Jonathan Winfisky’s glass studio in Charlemont Massachusetts. He got his start at the UMass Amherst glass studio in the early 70’s, and after double majoring in glass and sculpture he traveled the country learning and developing his trade. He settled in the hills of western Massachusetts and blows glass in a studio he built with furnaces he built; It’s very impressive. What I liked most about the visit was all the demonstrations, and then in the end getting the chance to try blowing glass for myself. He, more than anyone else we have visited so far, showed and explained to us his processes and the thought behind his work; he showed us how he makes ornaments, pumpkins, and bowls. He explained that to be a glass artist you have to be familiar with engineering, mechanics, chemistry, and ceramics. He draws inspiration and practical knowledge from all of those areas, and uses the it to build his studio and create his art. I had a great time while I was there learning about his art, and getting a chance to blow my own glass.
